Chris Huckenpoehler will join the Republican ballot during this year's City of Frederick elections. Huckenpoehler said he wants to make a difference in his adopted city. He moved to Frederick three years ago from Virginia. "I want to see real common-sense change in the city," he said. Huckenpoehler, 42, said he has five issues he will focus on if elected to office. First, he said he wants to address crime with more police resources. "I believe you beat the crime by education, awareness," he said. Huckenpoehler said he has seen more drug dealing than he cares for in his South Market Street neighborhood. Education improvements, while not under the city's purview, is an issue Huckenpoehler said he will support. "They certainly would have an advocate in me as an alderman," he said. He said he wants to move forward with road and other transportation improvements. "Sometimes I ride around these streets, and I feel like I'm riding on old cobblestone roads," he said. Huckenpoehler said he will also focus on reducing the bureaucracy in city government. He also wants to lower _property taxes. "The burden on us is already way too high," he said. "As you lower taxes you get a more dynamic economy." Huckenpoehler grew up in Annapolis. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 10 years as a paratrooper, drill instructor and communications specialist. He currently works as a security program manager for a government contractor. He lives downtown and has a 6-year-old son. Huckenpoehler joins 10 other Republican candidates for alderman: Shelley Aloi, Bill Ashton, George Bauer, Robert Cassidy, Joe Cohen, Senitta Conyers, Amanda Haddaway, Alderman Alan Imhoff, John Shupe and Alderman C. Paul Smith. Democrats running are Josh Bokee, John Daniels, Alderman David Koontz, Andrew Kotkin, Carol Krimm, Alderwoman Donna Kuzemchak, Michael O'Connor, Kelly Russell and Karen Young. The primary election is scheduled for Sept. 15.
