Frederick native Shelley Aloi decided to get involved with her community when she moved back to town in 2002.Seven years later Aloi is attempting to secure a spot on the city's highest elected board as her first publicly elected office. "Primarily, I'd like to take a different approach to this bad economy," said Aloi, a Republican candidate for alderman. "We have a terrific foundation here," she said. That includes capturing innovations being made in federal agencies, companies and other organizations based in Frederick and the surrounding area. The work would involve expanding the Frederick Innovative Technology Center Inc., a incubator for high-tech businesses. Aloi, who works in foreclosure prevention and assistance with Citi, said another priority would be to educate residents about city government. "The goal is to work together with the NACs (Neighborhood Advisory Councils) and in some way create a system where the average citizen has full access to what's going on," she said. Aloi grew up in Frederick and graduated from Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. She went on to Hood College, where she earned a degree in biology. She started work at the National Cancer Institute and worked with a local doctor before leaving Frederick to pursue various humanitarian causes. The work took her to China to teach English and Amsterdam, Netherlands, to work with the homeless and drug-addicted. Upon her return to Frederick , Aloi said she got involved with Leadership Frederick County. The organization opened her eyes to her hometown, she said. "I learned more about our resources and the potential of this place we called home than all of my years growing up here," she said. Aloi is facing 10 other Republican aldermanic candidates in the Sept. 15 primary election.
