A body was found in the Potomac River near the Point of Rocks boat ramp Sunday afternoon, a fire and rescue official said.

A passerby called police at 4:10 p.m. to report the body, which was near mile marker 48 of the C&O Canal, said Andy Arnold, chief of the Carroll Manor Fire Company.

A medical examiner was on scene Sunday afternoon, he said. Multiple state police, sheriff's office, and fire and rescue units were stationed at the Point of Rocks train station.

State police are handling the investigation.
