ANNAPOLIS — A state legislator who objects to the Frederick County sheriff’s stance on immigration enforcement opposed a bill on Wednesday authorizing a pay increase for the agency head.

The proposal, which would raise the sheriff’s yearly salary from $100,000 to $125,000, cleared the Maryland Senate with 45 votes of support. The lone opposing vote came from Sen. Victor Ramirez, who said he is concerned about Sheriff Chuck Jenkins’ attitude toward the immigrant community.

How about cops being arrested for DWI or assault?

which would be great if he was a federal law enforcement official, which he is not. the "illegal Immigrants" he arrests are turned lose once they are turned over to the Feds, because the arrests were not legal in the first place. Has he raided a single McDonalds or Roy Rodgers in the area? No yet they all have illegals working there. Its an old magicians trick. Don't look at my left hand while I set up the trick.

Except that Jenkins is likely to be the next sheriff.

Ramirez is not condoning illegal activity she is stating her opinion about a small county Sheriff distracting his citizens about illegal aliens while violent crime and hard drugs rise in his county?

Yea and why would a qualified Cop be Sheriff for a measly 100K a year? Oh wait what does that say about our current Sheriff????

But not before. Santos was just eating lunch. She wasn't being arrested. Now who is clueless?

Any board of directors would fire a CEO who didn't understand the limit of his jurisdiction.

Differently? You mean by rewarding incompetence with higher pay?

Then there would be no law enforcement anywhere because they all get sued all the time

    I support the pay raise.

It will attract qualified candidates for sheriff.

What Sheriff Jenkins does not understand is a person has to be suspected of committing a crime under state, county, or municipal law before the inquiry can be made into citizenship. Sheriff Jenkins wants to pull an Arizona and ask anyone he choses to show me your papers. Except the anyone he choses to ask most likely looks foreign.

Aren't you glad government works differently? Ramirez would be up on charges of discrimination. Everyone knows his ties to Casa de Maryland and their new education group.

Rameriz opposed a program "which authorizes correctional officers to enforce certain immigration laws."??? That's what law enforcement is supposed to do.

He must have gotten confused. The pay adjustment is for a position, not a person.

We should not be giving or holding pay raises based on political views. That is very dangerous.

Over the past decade we’ve seen epic fail after epic fail of CEOs getting fired because they don’t know how to respond to bad press. From people that bring on bad press, like Toronto mayor Rob Ford, to CEOs who have bad press thrust upon them, like the former CEO of LuluLemon. In either case, they get fired in their positions, just like you will get fired because of bad press.

The part where laws are enforced based on jurisdiction. There is no state, county, or municipal regarding citizenship. The US Constitution places that jurisdiction in the federal venue.

Any CEO who created circumstances that caused a company to be sued on multiply occasions would be fired by the Board of Directors. End of story.

How much is a CEO worth? The Sheriff is only paid $100,000 per year but is responsible for a department with a $20-million annual budget. This is bigger than most small businesses. Why shouldn't the Sheriff be paid according to his responsibilities? If public servants are paid nickle-and-dime salaries, we get people in office with nickle-and-dime attitudes and performance.

Yes, he is. I'm not defending Jenkins, I just find his position/attitude on Jenkins kind of a pot calling the kettle black situation.

And don't people realize that this pay increase is for the NEXT sheriff, not the current one?

Would there be such opposition to this if Bickel were the current sheriff?

Ramirez condones illegal activity and, unlike you liberals, I have a problem with that.

How do you get a raise when your organization is completely out of control and the order of the day is "do whatever you want"? Show me performance appraisal where the guy bettered himself. BTW: I don't have a problem with the immigration policy.
