A regional transportation task force will promote allowing commuter buses to ride on the shoulder on certain stretches of I-270.

A study from a task force working under the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Transportation Planning Board reported that doing so would make commuter buses arrive more reliably, encouraging ridership. In turn, that could help ease traffic congestion and cut air pollution by getting cars off the road.

Buses merging on and off the shoulder....yeah that will work. Developer sprawl before infrastructure. Natelli should pay for a lane from Clarksburg to Frederick after being gifted Urbana and creating a nightmare hill-curved merge from 80 onto 270 South and minimum length turn lane off 270 onto 80. Live here Work....in MoCo.

How often have you sat at the bottleneck at 121, add a lane and that bottleneck will disapear. How long has it been since that lane was added to 121?, How many communitities have been added to 121, and north since that lane was built ? How many bridges between 121 and Frederick have been redone in this time, but not sufficiently widened. This is just another study that someone comes up with to get grant money from the federal/state government to help their company (contractors) make money, and propose a solution, that of course will never get implemented. These studies happen multiple times a year, someone comes up with a solution, never happens.

adding another lane will do what? Been on I270 lately have we? It is called a moving road block. All another lane is going to do is add another lane to drive slow in. No one drives the same speed.. That is what cause a lot of traffic jams. The fast catch the slow. The slow will not move over. I know the slow is driving the posted speed limit, but most do not and always want to pas those who do. Hence the problem. The knucklehead who thought buses on shoulder was a bad idea due to broken down cars and or accidents. The buses just need to slide over when that is the case. In any event it is still better then the buses sitting in traffic and the state paying 7-8 million per mile for another lane.

You're going to buy hundreds of police cars and pay salary for a couple hundred new police officers??? Good luck.[wink]

Using the shoulder would be fine but the buses would have to merge back in every time they came to an overpass at an interchange, which are all two lane each way.

Outlaw single-occupancy vehicles during rush hours on I-270.

Is this the same group that determined that a left turn lane from US340 into on coming 55MPH traffic would be a good idea? I would like to know what this brain trust plans to do with the buses when the shoulder is blocked by disabled vehicles or accidents that have been moved to the shoulder. Allowing buses to use the shoulder as their main travel lane is NOT a solution. It's going to create even more gridlock.

Yes please let Virginian's try it first. I would take the Marc train rather than riding in a commuter bus that is driving on the shoulder.

How about putting some of those transportation tax dollars to work adding a lane that everyone can use?
