Frederick 's big-play potential finally bubbled to the surface Thursday night. The Cadets blasted visiting Century with three scoring plays of 62 yards or longer in a 39-7 win that raised their record to 3-0.
It was the kind of performance Frederick coach Vince Ahearn had been waiting for with first-year, playmaking quarterback Andre April at the helm.
Ahearn described the Cadets' play as methodical in victories over Tuscarora and Winters Mill, but that wasn't their style against Century.
Frederick struck the previously unbeaten Knights (2-1) like lightning, turning paper-cut plays into deep gashes.
Four of the Cadets' six scoring drives were five plays or less.
April tossed a short pass over the middle to Steven Long and the senior receiver raced through the defense for a 75-yard touchdown late in the first quarter.
Then, on the second play of the third quarter, April tossed an innocent looking screen pass to Danzel Ferguson in the flat and he turned it into a 62-yard touchdown jaunt, breaking tackles along the way.
It was the first time the junior receiver touched the ball in the game.
At the start of the fourth, April eluded a sack and hit Ferguson again on a 68-yard scoring play.
"That was a good job on (April's) part. I got open, he found me and we took it in. That's what we are supposed to do," said Ferguson, who scored both times he touched the ball.
April completed 9 of 17 passes for 251 yards. He also ran for 52 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:57 left in the second quarter.
"My coaches always tell me to keep my eyes open," April said. "We weren't expecting to score on all those plays. We were just trying to move the chains. That's what we do. We don't go for big plays. We just go for first down after first down. It's a moving offense, not just a straight we-are-going-to-score offense."
Ahearn senses April is becoming more comfortable under center.
"The more comfortable he gets, the more opportunities he is going to plays like you saw tonight for us," Ahearn said.
Frederick will carry its perfect record into Urbana next week for a showdown with the Hawks.
"We told the kids to go out and enjoy this one tonight," Ahearn said. "The coaches are going to get started on Urbana as soon as they leave the locker room."
