Alex Cornish was crouched down and silent. He could hardly believe what was happening just a few feet away.Cornish, Frederick 's 6-foot-1, 215-pound terror on the defensive line, had just played one of the best games of his high school career to lead the unbeaten Cadets to their first win over Urbana in 11 meetings Friday night. He blocked a punt, made several bone-jarring tackles and fell on a fumble to seal Frederick 's 28-20 victory. Yet, there was Cornish, kneeling on the sidelines at the Urbana stadium, watching starting quarterback Andre April deliver a postgame interview. "Man, how much do you want to bet they don't even put my name in the paper?" Cornish said to April as they walked off the field together. While headlines aren't usually reserved for defensive lineman, Cornish made plays that were impossible to ignore against Urbana . (See CADETS B-3) "I think Alex has really been overlooked all season as far as his play and what we have been able to do with him," Frederick coach Vince Ahearn said. "He's playing a lot of different positions. Sometimes he's inside. Sometimes he's on the edge. He's such a great athlete. We knew we'd be doing a lot of things with him." Even April had to sing the praises of Cornish and the defense during his postgame remarks. "We're 4-0 because of the defense," April said. "That's who gets the credit this time." To be fair, the Cadets had many players rise to the occasion against an Urbana team that boasts a pretty good defense, too. The Hawks (2-2) had only allowed 26 points in their first three games. There was Frederick 's Kevin Fisher, who scored on touchdown runs of 7, 4 and 2 yards. There was April, who completed 11 of 19 passes for 147 yards. No pass was bigger than the one April threw to Hank Adams to convert fourth-and-14 on the Cadets' first drive of the third quarter. The pass was deflected into the air before Adams pulled it in. It was the second fourth-down conversion on the drive and third in the game for Frederick . On the next play, Fisher ran in from 7 yards out and then scored on the two-point conversion to give the Cadets a 21-14 lead with 2:37 left in the third. Then, there was Frederick backup quarterback Andrew Zimnik, who entered the game late in the first quarter after April had turned an ankle. Zimnik, a junior, completed 3 of 6 passes, including a 7-yard touchdown pass to Danzel Ferguson that capped a 16-play, 57-yard drive. April, who reentered the game at the start of the second half, said, "Zimnik was in the mind frame that it's time to step up and be a leader. He stepped up and was a leader and the defense had his back."
