Fundraiser marks return of Christian Radio

A local radio station soon will have a new sound. To celebrate, the board of directors for Christian Radio Coalition, all of whom are volunteers, organized a fundraiser Saturday at the Lynfield Complex Center.

For about four years, the nonprofit organization worked to bring Christian radio back to Frederick County listeners, said Michael Betteridge, president of the board of directors. Owners at WTHU, 1450 AM, agreed in February to transfer their license to the nonprofit organization.

The celebration included a silent auction featuring dozens of items including paintings, gift certificates and gift baskets. The crowd of more than 100 people also enjoyed a concert performed by Christian recording artist Jami Smith, playing for the first time in Frederick .

When asked how much money Betteridge hoped to raise for the coalition, he said it isn't so much about the money, but attracting listeners to the AM station and its programs.

The coalition began when WJTM, a Christian radio station in Braddock Heights, went off the air in 2004 after 19 years of service.

WTHU will make the switch to Christian music and talk shows June 9, Betteridge said. WTHU has been operating in Thurmont for the last 41 years as a classic oldies station.

Betteridge said what will make the radio station unique under its new ownership is that it will be run by representatives of different religious denominations. Members represent 15 different congregations including Methodists, Lutherans and Pentecostals.

"We've all come together with the same purpose," Betteridge said.

The station can appeal to a variety of listeners, he said.

To draw attention to the station, he said, operators will spotlight local talent, featuring live broadcasts of several local Christian musicians.

A teen-hosted show, under the supervision of a youth pastor, will also give local youth the opportunity to discuss a number of controversial issues on the air, Betteridge said.

While showcasing local musicians, he said, the radio station will also support local churches.

"We're excited about this opportunity," Betteridge said.

Several people at the fundraiser agreed the Christian music station will be well received in the county.

Jeff Toles said he believes there is a demand for such a station in the area.

"I will definitely listen to it," he said. "I love gospel music."
