Urbana leaves

The last time Urbana faced Frederick , the Hawks suffered a shocking eight-point upset in a late-September matchup.

Nearly a year later to the day, Sean Fitzpatrick and his Urbana teammates quickly squashed any hopes for a similar outcome, using an early onslaught that included three defensive scores to bury the injury-riddled Cadets on their way to a 46-6 rout Friday night at Frederick High School.

"We used it (last year's result) to help us out," Fitzpatrick said. "We came out really fired up."

The senior tight end/linebacker made several early big plays on both sides of the ball to help his team take a 26-0 first-quarter lead, an advantage the Hawks stretched to 40-0 by the end of the first half.

On the Hawks' first drive, Fitzpatrick made a nice leaping catch over the middle for a 23-yard gain to the Frederick 3-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by Ross Flanigan.

Urbana 's next drive ended with Fitzpatrick on the receiving end of a 33-yard Jesse Heon touchdown pass, giving the Hawks a 13-0 lead with 6:40 to play in the first quarter.

He wasn't finished yet. On the ensuing Frederick possession, he sacked sophomore quarterback Zach Britt in the end zone -- his second sack of the night -- forcing a fumble that was recovered by Brad West for an Urbana touchdown.

The Hawks (4-0) pass rush was relentless, harassing Frederick quarterbacks all night and forcing two fumbles, both of which were recovered for Urbana touchdowns. It also was instrumental in forcing two first-half interceptions, one of which was returned 60 yards for a score by Brad Hickman.

"We've been working all week on the pass rush," Urbana coach Joe Polce said. "This is the third week in a row that we've faced a spread team, so we've been experimenting with some different things. The guys up front really did a great job."

The Urbana offense looked impressive as well, led by an efficient outing from Heon, who hit on 8 of 14 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown. Tailback Flanigan, while slowed by the Frederick defense as the game wore on, finished with 84 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.

The Cadets (1-3) had a number of scoring opportunities, but several sustained drives fell short in Urbana territory. Quarterbacks Britt and Andrew Zimnik turned in gutsy performances in the face of heavy pressure.

Zimnik -- still recovering from a shoulder injury -- was strong in the second half after relieving a banged-up Britt, who was recently called up from the JV squad after a rash of injuries. He finished 9 of 14 for 95 yards and led the Cadets to their only score, a 2-yard touchdown pass to Mark Hoy as time expired.

"We weren't sure if he was going to be able to throw tonight," Frederick coach Vince Ahearn said. "He hadn't been throwing at all in practice. I'm sure he just fought through the pain. That's just the kind of kid he is."
