Start with a little defensive persistence, mix in some offensive power and you have the Frederick Cadets' recipe for football success.

At Cadet Stadium on Friday night, it took heavy helpings of both to push the home-standing Cadets past the Eagles, 27-6.

Frederick 's second win of the season was far from flawless, though, as the Cadets turned the ball over five times, committed six penalties and displayed a lack of precision in the passing game.

"It is bitter sweet, really," Frederick coach Vince Ahearn said. "Of course you don't want to have lapses in your execution, but it was still great to see the kids come back."

It was primarily the Cadets' powerful ground attack that kept them in control, with junior running back Andrew Hartman gobbling up 150 yards on 29 carries and his backfield mate Rico Johnson adding 95 yards on 15 touches.

"It was really a good effort," Hartman said. " We came to play tonight and despite some bad plays we were able to go home with a win."

The Cadets (2-3) threatened to score twice in the first quarter, but two fumbles kept the game tied at zero well into the first half.

The Cadets started the scoring with 9:28 left in the second quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run by Johnson, capping an 11-play drive that took them 63 yards.

"The defense kept changing the possession and shutting things down," Ahearn said. "The offense was able to get out there and build on those stops and finally score to get things moving."

The Eagles responded on their ensuing possession, though, with a 58-yard drive, finished by a 4-yard touchdown run by Brendon Blanchette.

The score marked the only time FSK threatened, as the Frederick defense pestered quarterback Nick O'Melia, who went 6 of 22 for 58 yards and an interception.

"I think we were dominated on the line of scrimmage," Eagles coach Bill Hyson said. "It is kind of tough to create many opportunities when we dropped a few passes and couldn't get any push up front."

After tacking on another score before the half, the Cadets came out after the break with confidence.

Starting on their own 15-yard line, Frederick quarterback Andrew Zimnick chucked a 63-yard bomb to Mark Hoy to put the Cadets within striking distance. Hartman finished the task two plays later with a short run to put the home team up 20-6.

All that was left was for Frederick to use that power and persistence to grind out the win.

Leading by 14 points with 30 seconds to go, Kim picked off a pass by O'Melia and took it back for a score. The touchdown sparked a celebration on the Frederick sideline and gave the Cadets some momentum going into their next game at home against South Hagerstown.

"We have had a lot of injuries to key personnel and other issues this season," Ahearn said. "But we stuck together today and we got a good win."
