On April 5 we launched a new section in our Sunday paper called Monday Advance following a decision at The Frederick News-Post to suspend publication of our Monday edition.I wanted to take some time this week to reflect on the six-page special section and also gather your input on what we can do to make it better.
As I noted in an April column the purpose of Monday Advance was to retain some of the content that was published each Monday -- and give it to you a day early. These features included our popular Farm & Garden section, Katherine Heerbrandt's column and the City Notes column by reporter Adam Behsudi, as well as Dear Abby, horoscopes, TV listings and the Sudoku puzzle, among other things.
We also started a new twice-a-month feature in Monday Advance called "Frederick 's Most Wanted." This feature has not only has become quite popular with readers, but also has aided authorities in the arrest of 17 fugitives to date.
We're constantly trying to fine-tune the section, and I wanted to let you know that we'll be adding three new features starting in September.
The first will focus on the so-called "cold cases" -- local homicide and other crime cases -- that the police have been trying to crack for years. This new feature will run a least once a month on the weeks that we don't publish "Frederick 's Most Wanted."
We also plan to bring back the restaurant inspection reports so you'll know which local restaurants are under the scrutiny of the county Health Department. This will run in Monday Advance on the last Sunday of each month.
Finally -- and this is the one I'm most excited about -- we will start a weekly feature on Sept. 6 called "Frederick Watchdog." This new column, to be written by Cliff Cumber, is dedicated to keeping a close eye on government waste or anything else you think needs to be investigated. Tips can be e-mailed to us at watchdog@newspost.com.
I also wanted to ask what you think of Monday Advance. Is it meeting your expectations? Is there something we can include that would make it better?
For starters, we're debating here on whether or not to continue to include the "Top 10 most-read stories" and "Top 10 most-commented stories" from our website from the previous week. Frankly, some believe the space could be better utilized with something else, while others have told us they want to know which stories were the biggest headlines.
We're always open to suggestions, so if you think of any changes you would like to see in Monday Advance, then drop us a line or shoot us an e-mail.
We'll be listening.
