Chris Zieman left no doubt on Sunday as to who would win the fifth annual CareFirst Blue Cross-Blue Shield Frederick Marathon. The 35-year-old from Chapel Hill, N.C., put a lot of distance between himself and runner-up Scott Herrick, of Mount Airy , at the end and won this year's event with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 15 seconds. He was more than eight minutes faster than Herrick, who crossed the finish line in 2:35:42. Jenn Shelton, 23, of Virginia Beach, Va., won the women's division in 2:53:42. She beat the course record of 2:56:57 set by Susan Graham-Gray in 2005. "I need a doughnut," a spent Zieman said after he crossed the finish line inside Harry Grove Stadium on Sunday. Zieman went on to say Sunday's temperatures during the marathon, which ranged from 52 degrees at the start to 57 degrees at the finish, presented a big challenge. At times, the wind blew right in his face. At other times, it would be to his back. It didn't matter which way the wind was blowing, Zieman said it was cold. "The last three miles were brutal," Zieman said of the wind. "It was also kind of hard to maintain any kind of rhythm because of the wind. The pace was all over the place." Zieman said the thing to do when the wind was in his face was just keep his head down. "But I did like it when it was a tail wind," he said. "Anyway, I'm glad it's over." At the start of the marathon, Zieman said he was bunched in with a lot of other runners and kept that pace in the early stages of the race. As the marathon progressed, he began to pull away from the pack. Zieman's lead over the rest of the field would range anywhere from six to 10 minutes before he settled in to his eight-minute advantage over Herrick. "It got kind of lonely out there at the end," he said. Herrick, who ran cross country and track at Linganore High School, where he graduated in 2000, agreed with Zieman's assessment of the wind. It was his second Frederick Marathon and he said he knew it would be tough to challenge Zieman. "But I still ran a good race," Herrick, 25, said. "I've had fun each time." Fun was also the way Shelton, 23, described her winning the women's title. She said she is an ultra-marathoner and runs distances longer than 26.3 miles when she competes. But Shelton said she didn't mind making the adjustment to the marathon distance on Sunday. She also said running in cold weather didn't bother her that much. "It cools me off when I get hot running," Shelton said. As Shelton crossed the finish line and saw that she set the record, she waved her hands in jubilation. Other Frederick runners finished among the top five in the male and female divisions. Ted Allwardt, 45, of Frederick , was the fourth male. He finished in 2:42:21. Nichole Posten, 30, of Frederick , was the third female. She finished in 3:28:57. Cash awards went to the top five finishers in each gender. First place brought $500 each, while second place finishers received $400, third place $300, fourth place $200 and fifth place $100.
