  • Dan Somers stood near the track outside the Frederick Fairgrounds early Sunday, holding a bow-bedecked sign that read: "Happy Birthday Hannah."

Somers drove from Fairfax this weekend with Hannah Fairman, his girlfriend, to wish her well in her first marathon.

He said they stayed at a Best Western hotel five minutes away from the fairgrounds, the start and finish point for this year's Frederick Marathon, but still came close to being late for the 6:30 a.m. race start.

More than 4,000 parking spots were available at the fairgrounds, but by 6 a.m. traffic had backed up on I-70 east heading into the venue.

Somers couldn't believe the lack of traffic organization, and said he saw participants running in opposite directions, trying to find the starting line.

Jenelle Green, of Randallstown, wore a hand-painted shirt with the name of her husband, Zaavon, written in bold pink and blue.

On the back, her shirt said: "You did it, congratulations!"

Jaylen Green, 5, seemed excited waiting for his father to cross the finish line. Jaylen normally does a fun run at such events, but on Sunday he was only a spectator.

This was Zaavonn's third marathon, Jenelle said, and his first in Frederick .

Jenelle said she arrived about 5:20 a.m., and had no problem with the heavy traffic that started around 6 a.m.

"I'm glad we got started early," she said.

Sylvia House, of Hagerstown, sported a yellow T-shirt with a sketch of a house that had legs carrying it down the road.

Her husband, Eddie, his brother Mike, and a niece were all running in the marathon.

Sylvia said her daughter Michelle Richards proposed making T-shirts in support of the family effort.

In her family, most of the men run, she said, while the women cheer them on.

Poised in the stands at the fairgrounds, Sharon Hipkins, of Wolfsville, waved a sign for her daughter Katie, 21, and a group of about 20 she joined called the Salem Soule Runners.

The odd spelling of Soule, Hipkins said, represents both a shoe's sole, and the soul a runner needs to finish the race.

Hipkins said the group was formed with members of Salem United Methodist Church in Wolfsville.

    Reasons to run

Barbara Klein, of Fredericksburg, Va., said her daughter Jacqueline Cassel was attempting to qualify for the upcoming Boston Marathon.

Klein's grandson and granddaughter made signs cheering their mother and other friends in the race.

"We're so proud she has the stamina," Klein said of Cassel. "We're not a family of runners."

Hannah Gaffigan, of Woodsboro , beamed with pride for her father, John Clarke, 70, also of Woodsboro , who ran in the half-marathon, or 13.1 miles.

Gaffigan said Clarke picked up running as a hobby at the age of 40, and regularly runs on Sunday morning steeple chases in Frederick .

She said running every day keeps her father fit and energetic. "I'm very proud."

More than a dozen members of the Ivory family, from Bethlehem, Pa., wore orange T-shirts in honor of Dan Ivory's son, Mark.

Dan's nephew, Chad Conrad, of Monrovia , ran the half-marathon in honor of Mark.

Dan said Mark, who is 12, had a stroke when he was born, and has had approximately 40 surgeries since then.

"He's had a pretty rough life so far."

He said Mark couldn't make it to the race because his condition was not stable.

On the bottom of Conrad's T-shirt was an address for Mark's web page: www.caringbridge.org/pa/marky.

Dan said he was amazed at the generosity, especially from strangers, he and his family have received over the years, as his son has struggled with his condition.

Conrad said making the T-shirts and running in the race, which he loved, was a great way to bring his family together, and raise awareness about Mark's case.
