Fast runners equaled slow moving traffic early Sunday during the sixth annual Frederick Marathon. There was some traffic congestion but it's what the department expected, said Sgt. Wade Brown of the Frederick Police Department. Everything went OK.
"We moved people along as fast as we could," he said.
The biggest traffic problem came before the race even began.
"Everybody tried to get (to the Frederick Fairgrounds) early," Brown said.
They all came between 5 and 5:30 a.m., causing traffic jams on the roads leading to the fairgrounds and on I-70.
While the marathon route stayed mainly within city limits, several county roads including Spring Ridge Parkway and Quinn Road were affected.
There were no major problems with traffic on county roads and everything went well, said Cpl. Jennifer Bailey, spokeswoman for the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.
One complaint was lodged by a resident in the Spring Ridge community about people parking on the roadway, she said.
Weather was on the runners' sides with temperatures rising throughout the morning from the low 60s to low 70s, according to AccuWeather. Winds were around 10 miles per hour.
This year's marathon had a revamped route taking runners past city landmarks such as the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum on Rosemont Avenue and Carroll Creek.
"I think (the new route) went really well," Brown said.
At the conclusion of the marathon, no incidents of concern were reported and all runners, supporters and residents enjoyed a safe community event, Kathy Forrest of the county's department of emergency preparedness said in a statement.
By 1 p.m., all roads were open to traffic, Brown said.
