  • Two runners who were second in previous Frederick Marathons won the big prize in the rain on Sunday.

Dickson Mercer of Takoma Park, and a former Frederick resident who finished second in 2006, won the men’s race in 2:37.03.

Denise Knickman, of Baltimore and the second place finisher in 2005, won the women’s race in 3.02.20.

Much of the race was run in rain with the temperatures in the 50s.

Gabriela Trana, an Olympian from Costa Rica, set a Frederick record in winning the half-marathon in 1:19.25. The old record was 1:21.55.

Josh Beck of Carlise, Pa., won the men’s half marathon in 1:14.04.

The two races, along with a team relay and Saturday’s 5K race, are part of the Frederick Running Festival which is in its seventh year.

For Mercer and Knickman this was the first time they had run on this course. Last year the start and finish of the course was moved to the Frederick Fairgrounds from Harry Grove Stadium.

“That race was a lot easier,” the 27-year-old Mercer said of the 2006 marathon. “The course is a lot tougher now.”

    Knickman agreed.

“The hills were tough,” the 40-year-old physical therapist said. “I would have liked to have run a little bit faster, but given the conditions, the weather and the hills I’m excited to win.”

It rained through much of the event.

Both Mercer and Knickman finished far ahead of the second place finishers.

“It got lonely out there, I ran by myself quite a bit,” Knickman said.

Mercer said he felt a little sick at times and had trouble getting water down. After the race his wife, Emily Dufton, helped him walk to the stage area where he did interviews.

“The second half I was thinking about my time, but keeping it together,” Mercer said.

Last year, Brian Baillie, of Washington, won the men's race with a time of 2:34.48. The women's winner was Bethesda's Melissa Tanner. She finished in 2:56.14.

The Frederick Marathon race record for the men came in 2006 when Michael Wardian finished in 2:26.42. The women's record also came in 2008 when Melissa Tanner crossed the finish line in 2:56.14.
