The 2009 Frederick Marathon began at 6:30 a.m. today. This year marks the seventh running of the 26.2-mile race.
According to the Frederick County Division of Emergency Management, few problems were reported during the race and though traffic was congested in spots, traffic did move, according to Incident Commander Lt. Steve Tuel of the Frederick Police Department.
An expected 6,000 runners took to city streets when the kick-off gun sounded. The race, which began at the Frederick Fairgrounds on East Patrick Street, continued through much of downtown Frederick , the Md. 26 corridor and Spring Ridge.
Rain started falling in the area about 8 a.m. and, according to accuweather.com, it looks like there's a 60 percent chance of rain for the rest of the day.
Dickson Mercer won the men's race with an unofficial chip time of 2:37.03. Denise Kuckman was the women's winner, finishing with an unofficial chip time of 3:02.20.
Competitors in the race came from some 40 states, with about two-thirds coming from Maryland.
Nine runners were expected from California, two from Washington state and one from Hawaii.
More than 500 volunteers were expected to be on hand.
