Runners keep warm at the Frederick Fairgrounds after finishing Sunday's marathon.
With the heaviest bands of rain hitting the area Sunday morning, it was a soggy, cold Frederick Marathon for thousands of runners.

AccuWeather meteorologist Alan Reppert said a little over one-quarter inch of rain fell over Frederick on Sunday. The area received 0.61 of an inch from Friday to Sunday.

Frederick hit its high of 63 degrees just after midnight Sunday and the temperature fell throughout the day, Reppert said.

While the weather did not make ideal running conditions, no major incidents were reported, said Kathy Forrest, project manager for the county's department of emergency preparedness. There were a few minor injuries, with two individuals taken to the hospital.

The marathon closed several area roads throughout the city and a small portion of some county maintained roads.

"It went really smoothly," said Michele Bowman, Frederick Police Department community outreach coordinator. "Everybody was really patient."

With the marathon in its seventh year, many residents knew to avoid certain areas and took alternate routes, she said.

"Nobody really complained about anything."

Last year brought some traffic jams on roads leading to the fairgrounds and on I-70 prior to the race. Bowman said a constant flow of people headed into the fairgrounds Sunday.

The department had personnel on duty to handle the traffic disruption.

By noon, all roads were open to vehicle traffic, Bowman said.

"It was a great day in our community," Forrest said.
