WHAT DO the Frederick County high school proms and Frederick 's Most Wanted have in common? Not a lot, actually, except that both have been a hit with our print readers and website users.
Of course, you might disagree if you're from Urbana High School. More on that in a minute.
First, I would like to extend kudos to the Frederick Police Department, which approached us earlier this year to publish the names and photos of hard-to-find suspects who have warrants out for their arrest.
We created a twice-a-month feature called Frederick 's Most Wanted that made its print and Web debut in late March. It now appears in the Monday Advance section that's inserted into our Sunday paper.
It's been a success.
There have been six arrests so far, including three in one week. We have also recorded more than 54,000 page views on our website, an impressive number.
As for the high school proms, we decided to significantly expand our efforts and provide extensive photo coverage.
In past years we have taken an occasional photo at a prom or two if we received a request from a student or parent.
This time around we featured at least one photo in our daily newspaper from each local high school and posted hundreds of other related photos in various slide shows on our website -- generating nearly 40,000 page views to date.
Our intent was to recognize this once-in-a-lifetime, special night for the students.
Some schools, such as Walkersville , Linganore and St. John's Catholic Prep, were very receptive. Their principals allowed us to take many photos inside their venues.
Other principals approved taking exterior photos as the students arrived, but didn't want us to go inside. That was fine.
And then there was Urbana High School.
After multiple requests went unanswered, we finally had to ask the Frederick County school administration to intervene to see if they could at least get the principal to reply.
The reply from Principal George Seaton eventually came: "I'm sorry. We consider the prom a private event."
The only reason I mention this is because The Frederick News-Post received calls and e-mails from students and parents wanting to know why the Urbana prom wasn't covered.
Now you know.
I'll get on a small soapbox here and just point out that we were only trying to do something positive for the students. Part of this is in response to complaints that we get from some readers that we report only the bad news -- specifically, when kids get in trouble.
Of course that's not true, but we thought that publishing hundreds of photos of students looking their best would place them in a positive light and be something that readers, students and parents would enjoy.
We hope that next year the administration at Urbana High School will have a change of heart.
If not, then you should know that at least we tried.
