Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show set for Sept. 11 to 13

The 53rd Annual Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show will be held at Catoctin High School on Sept. 11 to 13. There is no admission charge for the event, however, a silver offering will be collected. More than 2,500 farm and garden, household, quilt, livestock, machinery and commercial displays can be seen during the three-day event.

On Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. in the auditorium after the community and civic flag ceremony, the show committee will honor the 125th anniversary of the Vigilant Hose Company of Emmitsburg . Also on Friday night the 2009-2010 Catoctin FFA Chapter Ambassador will be announced. Immediately following the program, at about 8:30 p.m., an auction of all baked goods exhibited at the show will be held in the auditorium. All grand champion and reserve champion baked goods will be sold at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the show runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Activities include a Market Goat, Beef, Sheep and Swine Fitting & Showing contest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ag Center and a pet show, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in front of the school. Entries can be entered on the terrace in front of the school. The pet show is also open to area residents. The petting zoo and pony rides will also be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The Thurmont Library will again have books for sale in the old gymnasium. People wishing to donate books for the library sale can drop them off at the school, while entering exhibits at the show on Thursday night or on Friday morning.

Also in the old gymnasium, John Kinnaird will have old pictures of Thurmont and Helen Mackley will display her old buttons and emblems. The Community Show will also have on display old photographs and displays of past years in the old gymnasium.

The Thurmont Community Ambulance will be having free blood pressure checkups on Saturday and Sunday. Thurmont and Emmitsburg fire companies will have demonstrations and fire equipment on display from 12 noon--3 p.m. on Saturday. Bring your children and camera for pictures.

From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, the Thurmont Grange will serve a turkey and ham dinner in the school cafeteria. Prices are: adults, $12; children under 12 -- $6; and children under 5, $5.

The 35th annual Catoctin FFA Alumni Beef, Sheep & Swine sale will begin at 7 p.m. in the Ag Center area on Saturday night. The Bluegrass Chapel Band will perform at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Sunday activities begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Goat Show, followed by the Dairy Show and Decorated Animal Contest. The decorated animal contest will begin at noon and $50 in prize money will be awarded.

At noon, the Catoctin FFA Alumni Chicken Bar-B-Que will be held in the cafeteria. The 30th annual horse school pitching contest will begin at 1 p.m.

The Log Sawing Contest will begin at 1 p.m. under the show tent in the Ag Center area.

Also on Sunday afternoon, the Linda Elower Studio of Dance will be performing at 1:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The Acacia Lodge 155, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Thurmont , Maryland, will be offering a Free Child Identification Program (CHIPS). The tentative times of this program will be noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. A picture of your child will be taken, along with a fingerprint and a page of supporting information will be loaded on a compact disk by a computer. A DNA swab will also be collected for safe keeping. This information will be then available should circumstances arise where it will be needed. None of this information is kept on the computer or by the lodge.

Farm machinery will be displayed throughout the event and the famous "Cane and Abel" Brown Swiss cattle will be exhibited at the show. Pat and Norman Sampson will have on display their Alpacas and Emu's will be exhibited by Jim and Peggy Royer. There also will be a petting zoo, pony rides, with various animals for children to pet and take pictures of.

The Barnyard Olympics for children will again be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon Age Groups are (5-6), (7-8), (9-10) and (11-13). The event will be expanded because of increased participation by the children and premiums will be awarded.

There also will be a martial arts demonstration at 2 p.m. in the old gymnasium.

Exhibits must be removed on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Community Show is sponsored by the Thurmont Grange, Catoctin FFA Chapter, Catoctin FFA Alumni and the Maryland State Agricultural Fair Board.
