Cougars cruise to fourth win of season

Thurmont -- For the first time since 1986, Catoctin improved to a perfect 4-0 record and the Cougars did it with a 52-8 win over rival Boonsboro, Friday night.

Given the two schools' history of close games, Catoctin coach Doug Williams admitted that he was surprised by the scoreboard.

Last season, Catoctin suffered a disappointing 28-22 defeat at Boonsboro.

"It's always been a hard-fought, very close game," Williams said. "That scoreboard shocked me because they are very well-coached. That score doesn't say that."

In fact, Friday night's victory marked the Catoctin seniors' first-ever win over the Warriors.

Cougar senior quarterback Dylan May was especially pleased because he was able to redeem himself after he was benched in last year's Boonsboro game.

"It feels pretty good," he said.

While May went 4- for- 9 and ran for a 24 yard touchdown in the second quarter, Catoctin kept the ball on the ground for most of the game for 301 total rushing yards.

"We usually don't have that many good runners," Williams said. "There's not going to be one kid on our team that has a lot of yards even though we run for a lot of yards. We mix it around."

Although Catoctin's perfect record is impressive, Williams believes that is not what makes this year's team stand out.

"It has nothing to do with the 4 and 0," he said. "They're focused for young guys. They do a great job of keeping their focus in practice."

The Cougars took a commanding 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and led 39-0 at halftime, scoring off all six first-half drives.

Playing with a running clock in the second half, Catoctin's Austin Carter made the score 46-0 heading into the fourth period off an 11 yard rush.

Boonsboro (1-3) finally got on the board with 10:30 left in the game when Brandon Mclean ran for a 6 yard touchdown.

For Catoctin, Carter and Travis Bewley had two rushing touchdowns apiece, while Paul Barbour, Landon Routzahn and Nicholas Maxey each had one. Joseph Dobbs kicked for two extra points.

After making it to the state semifinals last year, May would like Catoctin go farther this season.

"We all have a drive to get back in the playoffs," he said.

Williams, however, is not looking that far into the future.

All we care about now is Manchester," he said of next week's away game. "The playoffs are not important right now."
