Government stimulus money will soon be flowing into Frederick 's roads.

Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Tuesday the second phase of Maryland transportation projects funded by President Barack Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Frederick is set to receive almost $3.6 million of the $62 million available to local jurisdictions for transportation priorities. The specific amount distributed to each of Maryland's 23 counties is determined by a formula based on the number of vehicle registrations and the number of lane miles in a particular county.

O'Malley allocated $137 million in highway projects, which is dedicated to rehabilitating the state's existing roads and bridges.

According to the governor's press release, a total of $43 million will be distributed to smaller transit systems, run by counties or municipalities, to purchase replacement buses or improve transit facilities.

"With this second phase of projects we have completed the allocation of the recovery funds Maryland will receive for transportation infrastructure," O'Malley said in the release. "This is all about jobs and this type of investment allows us to complete more projects, employing more people in more counties and municipalities throughout the entire state."

Most Phase II projects will begin later this year or by next spring, State Highway Administration spokeswoman Kellie Boulware said. Projects involved in Phase I, awarded in February, will roll out within the next few months, she said.
