To say Nikki Giovanni is an icon may sound trite, but it's not an exaggeration. I remember reading her material when I was in grade school in the '80s, and then again in college, while studying poetry, and now as a journalist. She has crossed generations -- not to mention race and sex and class barriers -- and has experienced and conveyed America through its various manifestations, from the civil rights movement to the tragedy at Virginia Tech, where she teaches.
