Strings on Wings playing barn dance at White Rose Farm

Strings on Wings
Todd Clewell and Barb Schmid have played music together for years, popping up at farmers markets, weddings, dances and, this weekend, at White Rose Farm.

The duo, who goes by the name Strings on Wings, plays a mixture of Appalachian, Old Time, traditional fiddle tunes, Celtic, folk, waltzes, New England and French Canadian music. Most of their songs are arrangements, though they have written a few of their own and are currently working on an album.

With Clewell on guitar and Schmid on fiddle, they've performed at White Rose Farm in Taneytown for about four years, starting out with small gigs outside, then eventually moving their shows into a barn on the property.

"She (owner Sally Voris) had this barn she kept talking about fixing up," Clewell remembered. "It's a wonderful setting."

Clewell, based in Felton, Pa., thinks it's important for the community to come together.

"It's just sort of taboo for people to touch each other unless you're dancing," Clewell said. "I think there's a need for it."

Also at the event will be Karl Sensemann as the caller, known for his ability to create spur-of-the-moment dances no matter how many people are on the floor.

"Any fiddle tune with a 32-bar pattern will work," Clewell said. "We're there to make the rhythm."
