This 1856 barn at Just Wait And See Farm in Union Bridge is a finalist in a national barn preservation contest.
UNION BRIDGE — The Mackenzie family is elated that their Just Wait and See Farm is among the top 10 finalists of a national barn preservation program sponsored by Campbell's Soup.

Getting the 1856 barn among the top five winners will be up to voters.

The Campbell's Help Grow Your Soup program is not only reviving American barns, it is also providing educational opportunities to future leaders in agriculture by donating $1 for each vote cast, up to $250,000, to the National FFA Organization, Frederick County agriculture specialist Colby Ferguson, said.

Voting began in October and runs through Jan. 5. The top five barns receiving the most votes will be renovated by the Campbell's Soup Company.

Jay Mackenzie and his wife, Jodi, operate a 125-head beef cattle farm and raise corn, soybeans and hay. Their son, Dalton Mackenzie, 15, is a member of the Linganore FFA Chapter.

"I'm just tickled that we were the only barn selected in the whole state and to have it in Frederick County is truly exciting," Jay Mackenzie said. "Barns are dying artifacts of America. They represent part of our heritage that need to be preserved and it's a shame we're losing them."

Restoring a barn located in a traditional farming community would help bring an already strong community together for a common cause, Ferguson said.

To cast a ballot, go to www.helpgrowyoursoup.com or go directly to Mackenzie's Barn at www.helpgrowyoursoup.com/barn_waitsee.aspx and click on "vote."

Votes can be made once a day for the duration of the contest. A voting graph shows the progress of Just Wait and See Farm and the National FFA Organization.
