The Buzz

The Buzz serves an assortment of delicious bakery items like whoopie pies, brownies and bars, as well as cookies, pictured at top, and above, grilled panini sandwiches like the club panini with ham, turkey, cheddar, lettuce and tomated, with roasted red pepper aoili.
I've become a frequent visitor of The Buzz in the Green Valley Shopping Center in Monrovia.

I stopped by for tea and a scone one morning, a late lunch with my daughter and a sandwich to go one afternoon. The scones are fabulous. Two of my favorites are apricot sage and oatmeal maple pecan. They are mildly sweet with a pleasant consistency, not too dry like some scones tend to be. They are also the largest I have ever eaten. After talking with the owner Minda Merwin Metz, she told me they are made with buttermilk and a bit of brown sugar. A wonderful treat any time of day for only $1.79. The Buzz offers a wide variety of baked goods including cookies, brownies, bars, muffins, danish and cinnamon rolls to name a few. Baked goods are made fresh daily and they vary from day to day so there is always something new to try.

My daughter and I were moving fairly slowly the day after we saw Green Day in concert in D.C., so we arrived for lunch around 4:30 p.m. on a Thursday. We checked out the specials on the board outside and went inside to order at the counter.

We decided to share a roast beef panini ($6.99). I also ordered a peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwich ($2.99). To drink I ordered a large chai latte ($3.35) and Devon had a large iced cafe mocha ($3.85). Our panini featured roast beef, provolone cheese and sauteed cremini mushrooms on pumpernickel bread. The ingredients were hot and tasty inside the bread and the result was crispy and delicious. A tasty dollop of horseradish aioli was served on the side.

The peanut butter and jelly did not taste like the ones I ate with a glass of milk as a child. This one was served on fresh cranberry raisin bread with loads of peanut butter and raspberry jam all heated up Italian style. The warmth melted the peanut butter a bit to make the sandwich crispy on the outside and creamy and delicious inside. My chai latte was excellent. It was steeped long enough, which is a plus because I don't like them too weak. It was not too sweet (another plus) and there was just the right amount of steamed milk. Devon really enjoyed her iced caf? mocha. She said the coffee was good and strong and liked that it was topped with whipped cream and drizzled with chocolate syrup.

The Buzz serves Lavazza coffee. Lavazza is an Italian company with more than 100 years experience producing blends from beans grown in Brazil and Central America. Hot coffee/decaf is available for $1.05, $1.15 and $1.30. This gourmet coffee is definitely a bargain in today's soft economy.

We still had plenty of room for dessert. We figured we must have burned lots of calories screaming at Verizon Center the night before, so we decided to share one of the specialty sundaes. Two that sounded especially good were the Walk of Shame -- coffee ice cream on banana bread with bananas, fudge and whipped cream ($6.50) and the Buzz Bomb -- vanilla ice cream on a chocolate chip blondie with fudge and whipped cream ($5.99). We tried the Buzz Bomb with a Texas fudge brownie instead of a blondie. This was very good. The only problem was that we couldn't finish it. Guess we didn't scream enough after all!

Turns out that The Buzz is becoming a popular place to pick up a sandwich to go. I stopped by on a busy Saturday to order a chicken panini with pesto and buffalo mozzarella ($5.99). When I brought my sandwich home I was so pleased to see it served with fresh orange slices and a fragrant flower blossom garnish. The chicken breast was moist and tender and the buffalo mozzarella tasted very good, similar to a Monterey Jack.

The Buzz is a welcome addition to the Green Valley area. There is plenty of comfortable seating including rattan chairs and dining tables, as well as a sofa, two arm chairs and a coffee table full of magazines. My son even discovered a stash of games, including a very nice backgammon set. The chocolate-brown walls are adorned with beautiful, nicely framed artwork done by local school children. There's a high definition television, free Wi-Fi and outstanding customer service. The Buzz is located about 10 minutes from Mount Airy, Urbana, Damascus and New Market so I'm sure that we'll be seeing many more new faces around the neighborhood.

In Good Taste reports on an unannounced dining experience and is not meant to be a critical review.
