One of the best ways to really get to know an artist is through seeing or hearing a live performance. Live performances offer that personal improvisation that often gets cut out of studio recordings. They are windows for looking into the truer persona of an artist. Internet Archive is a non profit online library tasked with preserving human communication and the ever changing content of the web. As part of the Internet Archive library there is a Live Music Archive. The non profit feels that live performances are a part of our cultural history and therefore should be recorded and maintained. That is great news for us music fans because the result is an online library in which all files are stream-able, free to be downloaded, and are legal.  The biggest Internet Archive Live Music collection is the Grateful Dead collection and likely you have heard of this site before if you are a Dead Fan. Besides the GD collection however there are tons of other bands that have begun to allow mostly fans to post live recordings of their shows. Check out some of my top bands on Internet Archive:

My ability to spread my personally warped concept of good music has now expanded to other web mediums. Thanks to a fine suggestion from a local reader, you can now listen to a collection of my favorite artists on Last.fm. User code word = bucket_blogger.

Over the last few years I’ve noticed not just a music invasion on commercials but an Indie music invasion. Most of it started with or was associated with the iPod commercials that flooded the tele for some time. This was always an interesting phenomenon to me simply due to the juxtaposition of commercial mainstream products to non mainstream music. Recently, I was watching TV and happened to catch the new Cadillac SRX commercial.  Low and behold yet another Indie tune had made it to the mass media. The Cadillac commercial is set to Phoenix’s catchy single 1901. Phoenix is your typical indie electro-rock band. Their new release Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix contains the 1901 single and overall is a hip album to listen to. In fact I happened to be in Barnes & Noble at the FSK mall the other day and picked up a copy. I had intended to merely browse the stores rock selection, but I saw the Phoenix album and it was a cool $11.99 so I couldn’t resist. Overall I must say Barnes & Noble’s selection isn’t bad. However it's your typical cookie cutter retail store and the non sale items are pretty pricey as compared to Amazon or other online means.

The indie folk pop band Sea Wolf released their new album entitled White Water, White Bloom this past September. The group which is primarily led by singer songwriter Alex Church has two other releases to date, an EP and their first full length album Leaves In The River. Church uses a revolving list of musicians on each compilation, but the premise of Sea Wolf songs are generally the same album to album. Church is heavily inspired by writers like John Steinbeck and Jack London so many Sea Wolf lyrics and metaphors draw on elements of the natural world. In this post I wanted to compare and contrast Sea Wolf’s first and second full album releases. While the lyrical themes are very similar between the two albums the styles are a bit different. Leaves In The River was released in 2007 and is a very typical sounding indie folk album. It contains laid back, slower paced compilations accented by Church’s haunting voice and a fairly simplistic instrumental line up. Many folks fell in love with hits off this album like Winters Windows, Middle Distance Runner, and You’re A Wolf. White Water, White Bloom is a bit of a different beast in comparison. First off the instrumental line up is much broader containing about twenty instruments this time which gives the album a much more classical feel. The songs are slightly faster paced compared to the first release and have a driving drum section that makes each song feel like a march of life. The songs are all quite pleasing to listen to also with catchy beats and introspective lyrics. Some of my favorites off this album are Wicked Blood, Turn The Dirt Over, and Spirit Horse. The biggest gripes among fans are in the differences that I listed between Leave In The River and White Water, White Bloom. Original fans may have been expecting the same haunting raw indie sound again in the new release, but were surprised by the very polished and elegant tunes that were contained. I happen to be a fan of both albums however I find myself unconsciously listening to White Water, White Bloom repeatedly with out getting tired of it.  In conclusion both are excellent albums and you have your choice of Sea Wolf style.  I expect Alex Church to continue this phenomena of style experimentation through out Sea Wolf’s life span, so don’t expect that what you hear today will be the same as tomorrow.
