Where's the hope for the small market teams?

The New York Yankees won the World Series this year, but the way they did it might not be the best thing for baseball.
After not making the playoffs a year ago, they went out and signed the top free agents on the market — CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett. Other clubs wanted these players also. Baltimore and Washington both went after Teixeira and there was talk that Burnett might come to the Orioles because he lives in Maryland.
But those clubs, like the other small market clubs in baseball, couldn’t match the Yankees’ offer. New York has more money than anyone else and can sign who they want.
Of course the Yankees aren’t alone. Both Los Angeles teams, the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies are known to spend a lot of money.
The problem is where does this leave the small market teams. It leaves them with a losing record. Occasionally one might sneak into the playoffs, but they can’t compete against the big market teams.
Baseball needs a salary cap, but it won’t get one because the union is too strong. But something needs to be done so the fans of Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Washington and Oakland can have some hope.
