Local Sports Musings

That was a very good win for the men's basketball team at Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday night. The Mountaineers earned a 73-62 victory at American. Say what you will about the Eagles, they went to the NCAA tournament last season and held a big lead over an eventual Final Four team, Villanova, before falling in a first-round game.

This has been one of the best fall sports seasons ever in Frederick County. Four soccer teams reached the state semifinals, with three advancing to the final, and two volleyball reached the final four in the state in their classes. In addition, four local football teams will be playing for regional titles on Friday night.

It's great to see all of the success and it certainly makes our jobs here at the paper a little more fun.

There were six Frederick County football teams that qualified for the playoffs and their first-round games are now set. As of Saturday night, the date and times of these games aren't set in stone.

    Class 4A North

No. 4 Thomas Johnson (6-4) at No. 1 Urbana (8-2). This game will almost certainly take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. The rest of the game will probably be Friday night.

    Class 3A West

    No. 3 Damascus (8-2) at No. 2 Linganore (10-0).

No. 4 Tuscarora (7-3) at No. 1 Quince Orchard (10-0).

    Class 2A West

    No. 4 Middletown (6-4) at No. 1 Rockville (9-1).

    Class 1A North

No. 4 New Town (5-5) at No. 1 Catoctin (10-0).

It's an interesting slate of games, highlighted by the tussle between Frederick County powers TJ and Urbana, as well as the first meeting between longtime rivals Linganore and Damascus since 2006.
