As the economic belt tightens, and the winter weather looms, an easy way to save money and stay warm this season is to weatherproof your home.
Roger Davis, manager of May’s Hardware in Frederick, shows you quick steps to take toward weatherproofing your house and saving on gas and electric bills.
1. Check around windows and doors for air infiltrating open spaces. Apply fresh caulk or weatherstripping around necessary areas.
2. Where a wood frame meets concrete foundation usually needs weatherproofing. Apply caulk or weatherstripping to the gaps.
3. Old doors and windows need weatherstripping replacement about every 10 years.
4. Replace the threshold on your doors with premade threshold that adjust to the size of the door opening. Also check the rubber stop under the door to see if that needs to be replaced, too.
5. Visit your local hardware store for information on what types of weatherstripping or caulk you can use, and ideas on how to get the job done.
By weatherproofing your home and keeping an eye on home repairs, you can save big bucks when heating your home this winter.
