In an effort to save the world, organic shopping is on the rise.
Stores like Whole Foods Market are popular, but for many, too pricey. If you want to buy organically without breaking the bank, The Common Market’s Zoe Brittain and Nick Fitzpatrick explain the best way to shop on a budget.
The next time you’ve got a hankering for soy, remember their tips to save some money — and the earth.
1. Fitzpatrick, the produce manager, suggests coming into a store with a plan. Know what you want to buy that week, and don’t just pick whatever you find off the shelves.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from store employees, Fitzpatrick said. They are there to assist you, and if you’re lost finding the right vegetables or fruits, they can let you know what the best deals are.
3. The bulk food section is an easy way to save money, Brittain said. You can stock up on everything from nuts to granola for weeks’ worth of supplies, and you can bring your own containers, to avoid plastic bags.
4. Buying food, such as milk, in larger containers helps cut down on costs. When you buy a gallon of organic milk for $6 as opposed to numerous half-gallons for $4 each, you’re saving money in the long run.
5. Always look for sale items, often located on the ends of the aisles.
