Just as ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” begins a new season of celebrities learning the Cha Cha Cha and the Quick Step, now it’s your turn to pick up a few new dance steps.
Maria LaRocca of Maria’s Ballroom in Frederick shows you the moves to dance several ballroom classics.
The Rumba, or the dance of love, is “nice and slow,” according to LaRocca.
1. Move your right leg back
2. Bring your left foot to the side
3. Move your right foot together with your left
4. Step one is slow, holding your foot in place for a little extra time
5. Steps two and three are quick
The Mambo or Salsa, depending on the song’s tempo, is the easiest.
1. Toe first, slide your left foot forward and change your weight onto your left leg
2. Don’t move your right foot
3. Rock back onto your right foot, while changing your weight onto your right leg
4. Don’t move your left foot
5. Step back and move feet together
The Cha Cha is faster than The Rumba, so try to keep up.
1. Move your right foot backward and rock your weight with it
2. Step weight onto your left foot
3. Move your right foot sideways
4. Move your left foot together with your right foot
5. Move your right foot sideways again, then close feet together
Keep practicing, and maybe you can be dancing with the stars soon.
