The poor economy has got everyone searching for new ways to pinch pennies. Clipping coupons is not a novel idea, but it can keep your wallet a little fuller on the way home from the grocery store.
Frederick resident Hanna Benedict runs a coupon-clipping operation, sharing coupons with her family and friends.
“There is a thing called a coupon train,” she said, “where you get a bunch of people to sign up and everyone clips their coupons, pass the unused ones on to the next person who takes what they use and adds their unused coupons and passes it on.”
Benedict admits to posting an Excel spreadsheet list on her refrigerator to keep track of her coupons.
“I’m also, when I have the time, a nut about going through the circulars, and based on what’s on sale, and what I have coupons for, I make my grocery list.”
Benedict offers some tips on what to look for when clipping coupons, and the best ways to save at the store.
1. Check local newspapers for coupon pages. Some run Sunday to Sunday, while others are Wednesday to Wednesday, so keep an eye out.
2. Keep your coupons organized, in a folder or a box, to ensure you don’t forget to bring them when you go to the store, and to make shopping preparation easier.
3. Be sure to check expiration dates on all coupons before being disappointed at the store.
Happy (cheap) shopping!
