Blaine Young negotiates cab takeover

Former alderman turned WFMD radio talk show host Blaine Young will be the new owner of Wood Transportation, he announced yesterday.

Wood Transportation, which holds 16 permits, has been operating jointly with City Cab Co. for more than a decade. Owner Jerry Wood runs City Cab with 22 permits.

Together, Wood and his ex-wife Tammi Wood — the current owner of Wood Transportation — have kept the largest cab company in Frederick. They own nearly 70 percent of the available cab permits.

Young said he is negotiating a joint operating agreement with Jerry Wood that would take effect after he closes the deal with Tammi Wood. Young won two taxicab permits during a lottery June 20.

Young's interest in owning a cab company came after he served on the city's cab commission during his tenure as alderman in the 1990s.

Need a primary care doctor? Potomac Physician Associates is expanding into upper MontCo to serve patients in areas surrounding Urbana, Gaithersburg, Germantown and Clarksburg. They like to be called PPA.

Dr. Cheryl D. Lohman, who specializes in family medicine, joined the practice and will see patients at a new PPA office in the Shady Grove Adventist Medical Center, 19735 Germantown Road, Suite 100, in Germantown.

A press release from New Market-based Shoe String Communictions quoted Dr. Lohman:

"I've found that patients in the up-county area are exceptionally well-informed and sophisticated in their health care knowledge. I enjoy using my experience as a physician to discover the qualities that make each person unique and then offering treatment that is specific to their individual needs."

Since 1995, PPA has focused on internal and family medicine and accepts patients starting at age 14. The Germantown office opens later this month will be the third branch of PPA, which is headquartered in Bethesda with an additional office in Kensington.

Law website targets Latinos

Law website targets Latinos

A Falls Church, Va.-based website is making a bold claim:

"The world's most innovative website is now available to the Hispanic community."

I'm not so sure it's Earth's most cutting-edge website, but it does offer Latinos an interesting service: a directory of Spanish-speaking attorneys across Maryland.

"LatinoLawyer.com is a breakthrough in Internet technology allowing the user to see and hear from their potential attorney."

From the sound of that, you might think the website has a video confrencing feature or live streaming consultations.

Nope. The site has a few video clips that amount to little more than infomercials for select lawyers.

Still, it's nice the resource is available to Spanish speakers who need a lawyer.

When Lisa Nicholson was 12, she began to lose her hearing. That's when she met Zoey, a tan and black mixed-breed canine that became her hearing-ear dog.

When Lisa moved to Mount Airy in 1995, Zoey came along. Two years ago, Zoey died. She was 17 years old.

Earlier this month, Lisa opened www.zoeysdawgstop.com, a retail shop dedicated to the the lab, beagle, greyhound and collie mix that changed her life. A grand opening celebration is scheduled during normal business hours, Aug. 4 and 5.

The shop will offer holistic, natural pet food, treats and clothing, among other things. The business will also host animal wellness seminars.

“Most consumers are completely unaware of what is in their pet food," Lisa said. "We teach customers what to look for, and how to understand the labels."

  • Geico to open new Frederick office
    Posted: 07/18/2007
    Clifford G. Cumber

GEICO will open a new local office at 11 a.m. next Wednesday, with a chance to take a look at the GEICO Nascar show car.

(Question: does anyone know if a show car races at all?)

The new location is situated at 5732 Buckeystown Pike: a map.

In addition to the Nascar racer, Keyote, the Keys baseball team mascot, WAFY radio, and the GEICO gecko will be there to make special appearances. (Always nice to see a fellow Brit in town, even is he is rather, well, small and green.)

According to a press release, the local office's manager Alyssa Palermo and her colleague, Chris Moats, will bring 16 years of combined insurance experience to Frederick area customers.

“I chose to open an office in Frederick because business is so dynamic here, yet the area still offers a rural serenity for families," Palermo said. "Another reason is because of GEICO’s commitment to the military community and government employees. It is an honor to serve our GEICO policyholders in this area.”

  • Pain management office changes location

Patients of Dr. Willie Yu, a board certified doctor in pain management and acupuncture in Frederick for more than 10 years, can find his new office at 6550 Mercantile Dr. East, Suite 104, in Frederick. Here's a  map.

The office moved to a larger more modern space in April about a block away from the old location. Why didn't they call the FNP sooner? They didn't know we'd be interested in writing about it. A neighbor tipped them off.

The new location is more convenient for patients because it’s on the first floor. Patients had to climb a flight of stairs to reach the old office.

    For details, call 301-668-0888.

  • State attorney general announces AOL settlement
    Posted: 07/12/2007
    Joseph M. de Leon

The Maryland attorney general’s office  announced Wednesday its Consumer Protection Division reached a settlement with Dulles, Va.-based America Online, the Internet service provider known for the catchy phrase “You got mail!”

The settlement, which included attorneys general from 47 other states, resolves allegations that AOL made it almost impossible for consumers to cancel the service and refused to honor cancellation requests. AOL will have to change the way it handles  cancellations and make refunds to some customers.

AOL also agreed to reimburse the states $3 million.

Customer service reps earned incentives for “saving” customers from canceling their service. The agreement limits this practice, requires AOL to record then verify phone calls, and give customers more cancelation options.

AOL recently announced it would start limiting its role as an Internet service provider, giving customers access to free e-mail accounts.

    “You got canceled!”

  • Foster's Grille, scoop care of Frederick Maryland Online
    Posted: 07/09/2007
    Clifford G. Cumber

The future of the news business is hyper local and online. That's why I love Frederick Maryland Online (didn't it used to be called Frednet?), a local blog-about-town frequented by the ubiquitous Guy and Lizfrog.

I love it even more when they scoop us with something like a restaurant opening, as they did this week.

Why? Because it's civic, grassroots journalism at work.

The restaurant is Foster's Grille and it's coming to The Turning Point Center in Urbana with a grand opening mid-October or September.

This is the second location in Maryland; the other is in Edgewater. Most franchises are in Virginia, but the chain has eateries as far away as Missouri and Florida.

And check out Frederick Maryland Online if you haven't already.

  • Brunswick: booming business, Winedown
    Posted: 06/27/2007
    Joseph M. de Leon

Brunswick is hot these days, but never mind the weather. Michelle Kershner, Brunswick Main Street manager says it's all about downtown.

Three new businesses opened this month, including one this week. They include women's apparel shop Phoebe's Travel Trunk; Pixie Dust, a children's boutique and consignment shop; and gift shop Treasures to Warm the Heart.

The trio of shops are within walking distance of each other near the center of town.

Kershner hopes the Weekend Winedown 5 to 9 p.m. July 6 at the Square Corner will make downtown even hotter. A $3 cover will let guests enjoy beer from Barley and Hops Grill, wine from around Frederick County and food from Beans in the Belfry.

"As far as direct economic impact for businesses that night, some say First Friday's are their best night of the week and others just get a few customers," she said. "It's more about getting people out to Brunswick and encouraging them to come downtown."

For details, visit Brunswick Main Street.

  • Giant Eagle to open 7th St. gas station
    Posted: 06/27/2007
    Clifford G. Cumber

Giant Eagle is opening a new GetGo fuel station tomorrow at 1700 W. 7th St.

According to the statement we received this morning, the Frederick GetGo has eight pump stations and convenience items that allow customers to -- corporate slogan alert -- “Get In, Get Out, and Get Going.”

Now, in these times of costly gasoline, I feel it’s a matter of consumer responsibility to let you know that the station will offer double “fuel perks” for a limited time to Giant customers (them with the Giant Eagle Advantage Card): that’s 20 cents a gallon for every $50 spent using your Giant card in the Giant Eagle store or at a GetGo station.

According to the tax map the parcel is owned by Dodson’s Auto Care.

My colleague, Assistant Business Editor Ed Waters, an encyclopedia on all things Frederick, said the site is where the old Texaco station is, right near the gate for Fort Detrick.

(The nearest Giant Eagle store is in the West 7th Street shopping center, a little south of the GetGo location.)
