Blaine Young negotiates cab takeover
Posted: 08/10/2007
Joseph M. de Leon
Former alderman turned WFMD radio talk show host Blaine Young will be the new owner of Wood Transportation, he announced yesterday.
Wood Transportation, which holds 16 permits, has been operating jointly with City Cab Co. for more than a decade. Owner Jerry Wood runs City Cab with 22 permits.
Together, Wood and his ex-wife Tammi Wood — the current owner of Wood Transportation — have kept the largest cab company in Frederick. They own nearly 70 percent of the available cab permits.
Young said he is negotiating a joint operating agreement with Jerry Wood that would take effect after he closes the deal with Tammi Wood. Young won two taxicab permits during a lottery June 20.
Young's interest in owning a cab company came after he served on the city's cab commission during his tenure as alderman in the 1990s.

Frederick Cellars starts bottling operation
Posted: 08/10/2007
Joseph M. de Leon
If you've never seen a bottling machine run, you need to head to Frederick Cellars between noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Here's a map
The public is invited to watch Charlie Daneri and his crew bottle about 350 cases of their new wine, City Lights. That's more than 4,000 bottles.
Workers spent 14 hours Thursday bottling more than 500 cases of long-time favorite Reisling and a new wine Charlie calls Trail's End. It wasn't all smooth bottling.
The machine hadn't run in more than a year since Charlie bought Catoctin Vineyards and its equipment.
Much of yesterday's test run included adapting the machine to its new location. That included a few plumbing and electrical problems, but now it's ready to roll.
"We're all about making wine more enjoyable and fun," Charlie said. "It's definitely fun to watch this machine run."

PPA expands service, join forces

Need a primary care doctor? Potomac Physician Associates is expanding into upper MontCo to serve patients in areas surrounding Urbana, Gaithersburg, Germantown and Clarksburg. They like to be called PPA.
Dr. Cheryl D. Lohman, who specializes in family medicine, joined the practice and will see patients at a new PPA office in the Shady Grove Adventist Medical Center, 19735 Germantown Road, Suite 100, in Germantown.
A press release from New Market-based Shoe String Communictions quoted Dr. Lohman:
"I've found that patients in the up-county area are exceptionally well-informed and sophisticated in their health care knowledge. I enjoy using my experience as a physician to discover the qualities that make each person unique and then offering treatment that is specific to their individual needs."
Since 1995, PPA has focused on internal and family medicine and accepts patients starting at age 14. The Germantown office opens later this month will be the third branch of PPA, which is headquartered in Bethesda with an additional office in Kensington.

Dawg Stop grand opening next month
Posted: 07/23/2007

When Lisa Nicholson was 12, she began to lose her hearing. That's when she met Zoey, a tan and black mixed-breed canine that became her hearing-ear dog.
When Lisa moved to Mount Airy in 1995, Zoey came along. Two years ago, Zoey died. She was 17 years old.
Earlier this month, Lisa opened www.zoeysdawgstop.com, a retail shop dedicated to the the lab, beagle, greyhound and collie mix that changed her life. A grand opening celebration is scheduled during normal business hours, Aug. 4 and 5.
The shop will offer holistic, natural pet food, treats and clothing, among other things. The business will also host animal wellness seminars.
“Most consumers are completely unaware of what is in their pet food," Lisa said. "We teach customers what to look for, and how to understand the labels."

Pargo's auction: everything must go
Posted: 07/18/2007
Joseph M. de Leon
We reported last month that Pargo's Restaurant on Spectrum Drive in Frederick closed and will be demolished. The property will open in 2009 after it's been turned into retail space.
Looks like everything — doors on bathroom stalls, light fixtures, even the shrubs along the property — will be sold at an auction about 10 a.m. July 25. Check out the ad from today's FNP.
It's not a good year for restaurants. And not just for mom and pop shops. In MSNBC.com's report today on IHOP's bid for Applebee's, the following helps explain the recent dip in sales industry wide:
The move comes as Wall Street analysts anticipate a difficult second-quarter earnings season in the restaurant sector as soaring commodity costs hurt profits and consumers worried over high gas prices ate out less frequently.

Maggie Moos to hold reopening
Posted: 07/17/2007
Clifford G. Cumber
The local franchise of Maggie Moos
Ice Cream & Treatery will hold a grand re-opening July 28.
The store, in the Westview Promenade at 5241 Buckeystown Pike, will start celebrations at noon, re-cut a ribbon at around 2:30 p.m., and continue to celebrate until 10 p.m.
“We’re thrilled to be a part of the Frederick community,” said co-owner Sheryl Taylor. “Our friends and neighbors have been huge supporters of this store since we took ownership earlier this summer, and today’s celebration is our small way of saying thank you and giving back.”
From the press release:
In conjunction with the event, the treatery partnered with the local Young Life chapters to raise funds to help send kids from all over the region to camp this summer. MaggieMoo’s will donate 20 percent of the day’s sales to the youth group, which has also been selling MaggieMoo’s Dream Cakes to raise funds.
Throughout the day, Miss Maryland Shana Powell and Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen Kasey Staniszewski will be joined by members of the
Frederick Keys roster,
Hood College President Ronald Volpe, and members of Young Life to serve up a few cones as our celebrity ice cream scoopers during this special event.
The treatery’s mascot Miss Maggie Moo will be posing for pictures with her adoring fans throughout the day along with her friend Keyote from the Keys baseball team. Other activities planned include face painting, giveaways, and other fun activities -- not to mention lots of delicious MaggieMoo’s ice cream, of course!
New Life is "a non-denominational, Christian, non-profit organization that is committed to helping adolescents grow in their faith," the release states.

Jennifer's Restaurant sale not true
Posted: 07/17/2007
Joseph M. de Leon
According to the Tentacle.com, former mayor Jennifer Dougherty will be selling her restaurant at 207 W. Patrick St. in Frederick, because the building's owners refuse to renew the lease.
Not true, Dougherty said in a telephone interview today. She has an eight-year lease on the property and will continue business as usual.
"I'll be there every day just like I have been," she said. "I have no idea why anyone would say such a thing. I think they're pulling your leg."
Someone must be yanking really hard on that blue, sucker-lined appendage.

Home Grown Challenge to take up next week
Posted: 07/17/2007
Clifford G. Cumber
All of next week, from July 21 to 28, the gauntlet has been thrown down to Frederick County consumers.
The challenge is simple, according to a press release sent out by Colby Ferguson, a business development specialist in agriculture for
Frederick County Office of Economic Development: “I pledge to eat at least one item from a local farm every day during Buy Local Week.”
Those who take up The Buy Local Challenge "are encouraged to buy from local farms, farm stands, farmers’ markets, wineries, groceries and markets that offer genuine local products, or dine at restaurants that serve local farm food and wine."
From the release:
"Counties across Maryland have joined in to declare the last week in July annual Buy Local Week, and to issue the challenge to consumers throughout the state."
Look at the pull-out box to the right for places to buy local products. And stay tuned. On Monday's Home and Garden page, redoubtable business intern Nicole Dow will tell us all about the program.

Pain management office changes location
Posted: 07/13/2007
Joseph M. de Leon
Patients of Dr. Willie Yu, a board certified doctor in pain management and acupuncture in Frederick for more than 10 years, can find his new office at 6550 Mercantile Dr. East, Suite 104, in Frederick. Here's a  map.
The office moved to a larger more modern space in April about a block away from the old location. Why didn't they call the FNP sooner? They didn't know we'd be interested in writing about it. A neighbor tipped them off.
The new location is more convenient for patients because it’s on the first floor. Patients had to climb a flight of stairs to reach the old office.
For details, call 301-668-0888.

Foster's Grille, scoop care of Frederick Maryland Online
Posted: 07/09/2007
Clifford G. Cumber
The future of the news business is hyper local and online. That's why I love Frederick Maryland Online (didn't it used to be called Frednet?), a local blog-about-town frequented by the ubiquitous Guy and Lizfrog.
I love it even more when they scoop us with something like a restaurant opening, as they did this week.
Why? Because it's civic, grassroots journalism at work.
The restaurant is Foster's Grille and it's coming to The Turning Point Center in Urbana with a grand opening mid-October or September.
This is the second location in Maryland; the other is in Edgewater. Most franchises are in Virginia, but the chain has eateries as far away as Missouri and Florida.
And check out Frederick Maryland Online if you haven't already.

A bear named Fred
Posted: 07/02/2007

That fuzzy, slightly ragged looking stuffed bear outside Frederick Fudge and Ice Cream, at the corner of North East and East Church streets, has for the longest time gone without a name.
He was generically called Mr. Bear. Now you can call him ... Fred.
Prompted by the number of people who asked, "What's the bear's name?" the ice cream store's owner Mike Winder held a contest to name the mascot.
Of 150 entries, the most popular submission was "Fred." The grand prize winner was chosen from those entries.
Ethan Tluszcz, 2, won a $50 gift certificate. According to his mom, he names every animal Fred.
