  • A digital mapping tool that identifies Frederick County's major business parks and retail centers will give the county a competitive edge in attracting business, economic development officials said.

The Geographic Information Systems mapping tool, unveiled Friday, saves businesses time and money that may be considering relocation to, or expansion in, Frederick County, said Laurie Boyer, the county's economic development director.

Available online, the GIS map offers data such as zoning and major roads and parcel size — information helpful to the commercial real estate community, Boyer said.

"We're excited about this announcement," Boyer said. "It's a great marketing tool for us and for our target audience -- potential business prospects who are looking at Frederick County."

The mapping tool provides a wealth of information to interested businesses, real estate professionals, consultants and others about the opportunities for business growth and expansion in Frederick , said Sandy Wagerman, economic development research coordinator.

Boyer found out about the electronic mapping tool while attending an economic development seminar three years ago. The tool would have been too expensive to buy, so Boyer and her team sought and received assistance from Frederick County's GIS department, which helped design the online, interactive business parks and retail centers mapping tool.

Users can search for available commercial space and building lots within the county and receive detailed information on the site's characteristics and proximity to other businesses and services in the area.

Users can print or save PDF reports, providing demographic data and aerial views of the property or properties selected.

Boyer said the new tool gives Frederick County a competitive advantage against competitors from anywhere in the world.

"The tool makes the search for available sites easy and accessible, provides potential businesses and consultants with the information they need 24/7 and provides another resource to help bring good jobs to Frederick County for our residents," Boyer said.
