  • Richard Zane Belles said one of the unique factors about his new downtown Frederick restaurant is that patrons are away from the hustle and bustle of Market Street.

The entrance, at 102 N. Market St., leads guests down beneath street level to The Cellar Door, where they dine in a quiet atmosphere of brick and wood, with smooth jazz playing in the background.

Belles comes from a restaurant family. He started at a young age at his father's business, Green Valley Carryout in Monrovia .

In 1992, the family opened Belles' Sports Bar and Grille on East Patrick Street.

Belles' brother, Rollie, opened Philly Cheesesteak Factory at 5 E. Church St., which shared space now occupied by The Cellar Door. When Rollie decided to relocate his eatery to Urbana Pike, Belles opened The Bodega Deli Beer/Wine & Convenience Shop.

"A lot of people said they missed the atmosphere from the old restaurant," Belles said, referring to the Brown Pelican, once located at the same spot.

Belles renovated the space and now offers the bistro lounge atmosphere and regional American cuisine.

The bodega is still open, but patrons to that store enter from Church Street.

"They are two separate businesses," Belles said.

The Cellar Door is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Since opening in June, Belles said the response has been positive.

"We don't have a bar in the dining area, so there is no typical bar noise," he said. "It is really quiet and secluded."

The cuisine is available not only in-house, but also as carryout, and Belles does catering.

"Some of the most popular items are the vegetarian entrees, such as Georgia fried green tomatoes and eggplant, and Massachusetts-style zucchini pancakes," Belles said.

Some of the other menu items are Maryland crab cake, southern pork loin, Chesapeake Bay bird -- chicken breast stuffed with crab and Alaskan salmon.

There are also appetizers, salads and desserts.
