Originally published November 25, 2009

From Staff Reports

Frederick County Workforce Services hosted a panel discussion at Frederick Community College featuring a diverse group of professionals knowledgeable in the federal hiring processes.

Among the panel members was Kathryn Troutman, founder and president of The Resume Place Inc., a service business specializing in writing and designing professional federal and private-sector resumes, as well as coaching and education in the federal hiring process.

Internationally recognized as the "Federal Resume Guru" by federal job seekers and Federal human resources specialists, Troutman created the Certified Federal Job Search Trainer program and is the author of the award-winning book, "Ten Steps to a Federal Job," among other publications.

During the presentation, Troutman's shared some of her "top tips," such as the importance of identifying keywords from a job description to incorporate in a federal resume, and how a federal resume can address the "minimum 52 weeks of experience" often required by federal job postings.

Other panelists included Lyn Krout, director of the Fort Detrick Civilian Personnel Advisory Center; Jay Anthony, a recruiter for the Transportation Security Administration, a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; and Ella Drummond, a human resources consultant with the U.S. National Park Service.

As a representative of the Fort Detrick campus, Krout provided insights on hiring processes that are specific to vacancies within the Army, which is the largest federal employer with the U.S. Department of Defense. Anthony spoke on behalf of his experience as a recruiter for a federal agency with more than 450 work locations nationwide. Drummond shared application and resume advice from the perspective of an agency with more than 20,000 employees.

Video clips of the panelists from the panel discussion event are available through the Frederick County Workforce Services website at www.frederickworks.com.
