Our History - From 1880 to 1920

1880 Upon his return from business school in Poughkeepsie, NY, Frederick County native William T. Delaplaine forms a printing company with partners Thomas Schley and Victor Marken. The focus of the enterprise is to provide Frederick''s emerging business community with quality printed materials. The first products include letterheads for stationery, billheads, envelopes and pamphlets.
1883 A new service is offered with the formation of The News on October 15. A daily newspaper, The News becomes another vehicle to sell quality printing.
1888 The newspaper and printing companies are incorporated to become The Great Southern Printing and Manufacturing Company. A move is made to 44 North Market Street.
1890s The company adds bicycles and typewriters to the product line.
1895 William T. Delaplaine dies at 35, leaving a widow and four sons. The business continues under the direction of Mrs. Delaplaine''s brothers, Lewis E. and George Birely.
1900s Early marketing strategies are used to encourage new subscriptions. Clocks and calendars are given away, and a cooking school is held.
1909 Business partner, Thomas Schley, dies, and Robert E. Delaplaine, oldest son of the founder, joins the company as vice president and manager.

The first Linotype machine is purchased. This advancement replaces manual typesetting procedures, and reduces turnaround time for layout of print.
1910 Competition arrives with the first printing of The Evening Post. A rival newspaper, in 1913 it becomes The Frederick Post, and changes to a morning paper.

William T. Delaplaine, Jr. joins The Great Southern Printing and Manufacturing Co.
1916 The Great Southern Printing and Manufacturing Company acquires The Frederick Post. Now morning and evening papers, they continue to publish in separate locations.
1917 Company printing operations consolidate. Moving to one location on North Court Street, separate staffs publish two editions.
