Battle of Crampton's Gap took place Sept. 14, 1862 and served as a prelude to the Battle of Antietam, which took place three days later.
Town remains a prime tourist destination for Civil War buffs.

Recent claim to fame is the 2001 movie "The Blair Witch Project" (which is a fictional movie, by the way!) which was based in Burkittsville.
In mid-July every year, the town hosts the Annual Burkittsville Ruritan Club Carnival at the Ruritan Community Center grounds.
