Mrs. Gladys Mae Jenkins Coles



Gladys Mae Jenkins Coles, 85, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1923, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late William Schley Jenkins Sr. and Muriel M. Franklin Jenkins. She was the wife of William C. Coles III, who predeceased her in 1996.

Mrs. Coles was a 1941 graduate of New Windsor High School. She was formerly employed with the American Red Cross, Westminster branch for 20 years. She was a member of Westminster Church of the Brethren and numerous bridge groups. She was an amateur artist and exhibited her paintings. She enjoyed golf, gardening and cooking.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Connie C. and Michael B. Scharon of Westminster; grandson, Seth M. Scharon of Spring Grove, Pa.; great-granddaughter, Amelie Diana Scharon; brothers, Daniel H. Jenkins of Gettysburg, Pa., Rev. Gene E. Jenkins of Tallahassee, Fla., and John J. Jenkins of New Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sisters, Ruth Cook and Bertha Grimm; and brothers, William S. Jenkins Jr. and Nathan F. Jenkins.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 310 Church St., New Windsor, with the Rev. Paul N. Leatherman Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Sam's Creek Cemetery, Dennings. The family will receive friends from 2 to4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home.
