Mrs. Marjorie Greene Verdi

As originally published on Friday, October 30, 2009.

Mrs. Marjorie Greene Verdi

Marjorie Greene Verdi, 86, of Ijamsville, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, surrounded by three generations of loving family.

Born March 6, 1923, in Aberdeen, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Maude Ellen and Nathaniel Lee Greene. Married for 42 years, she was the loving wife of Dr. Anthony Edward Verdi, who preceded her in death on June 30, 1986.

In 1957, Marge and Ed Verdi moved their family from Bethesda to the rolling farmland of southern Frederick County. The sprawling Edmarve Farm became synonymous with the regional thoroughbred horse industry and is still in operation today. The Verdi's were charter members of Holly Hills Country Club and Marge was a charter member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a devoted member of St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church in Urbana.

She had a lifelong love of farming, family, gardening and golf, and was fortunate to be in her home, with her family by her side until the very end. In recent years, she was the inspiration and matriarchal host of GrandmaPalooza, an annual event celebrating friends, family and the love and joy she shared for so many.

She is survived by her three children, Anthony Edward Verdi III and his wife, Cookie, of Ijamsville; Patricia Verdi Harne and her husband, Harry Jr., of Union Bridge; and Maggi Verdi Warfield Gauthier and her husband, Paul, of Frederick. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark, in 1950.

She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Sean M. Quill and his wife, Heather, of Frederick; Guthrie Verdi Quill and his wife, Nissa, of Ijamsville; Justin R. Warfield of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; Zachary G. Warfield of Arlington, Va.; Anthony Eric Verdi and his wife, Susan, of Ijamsville; Hannah Verdi Warfield-Revell and her husband, Ken, of Richmond, Va.; Harry R. Harne III of Union Bridge; and Sarah H. Smith and her husband, Kevin, of Littlestown, Pa. Additionally, she is survived by eight great-grandchildren: Khloe and Kampbell Quill; Andrew and Georgia Quill; Anthony Edward IV and Alexander Verdi; and Kevin and Jason Smith.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Saint Ignatius of Loyola Country Church, Urbana Church Road, Urbana. Father Michael J. Jendrek will officiate. The interment will follow in the church cemetery adjacent to the church.

It was Mrs. Verdi's wish that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Road, Ijamsville, MD 21754.

Condolences may be shared with the family by going to KeeneyBasford.com.
