Mr. Richard "Dick" Elsworth Grimes Sr., 80, formerly of Thurmont and Emmitsburg, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Northampton Manor Nursing Center, Frederick. Born July 27, 1929, in Thurmont, he was a son of the late Milton and Myrtle Doomer Grimes.He was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served in Germany from May 10, 1951, until Jan. 17, 1957. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army. He is survived by five children, sons Richard E. Grimes Jr., of Emmitsburg, whom he resided with until December 2007, and Randy Grimes of California; three daughters, Sue Grimes and companion, Wesley, Sharon (Grimes) Rubinson, all of Sacramento, Calif., and Cindy (Grimes) Thompson and husband, Bill, of Citrus Heights, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, a sister, Shirley Baker of Thurmont; four brothers, John Grimes and Charles "Toddie" Grimes, both of Thurmont, Kenneth Grimes of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Sonny Grimes of Thurmont. He also left behind a special granddaughter, Melinda Grimes-Reynolds; and a special niece whom helped take care of Dick, Tammy Wachter (Molino) Turner of Thurmont, who will miss him dearly; also a sister-in-law, Frani Wachter and husband, Tom, of Lewistown. He was preceded in death by brothers Melvin Grimes and Paul "Boots" Grimes, and companion, Wilma Springer. Mr. Grimes is at the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. Funeral services will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Timothy S. May officiating. Pallbearers will be Curtis and Tammy Turner, Tom Wachter Sr., Debbie Stackhouse, Nevin Jackson Jr., and Sonny Grimes. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations be made to the Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Homes, P.A., 615 E. Main St., Thurmont, MD 21788, to help defray the final expenses.
