Mr. Charles Leonard Holland

Mr. Charles Leonard "Charley" Holland, 92, of Frederick, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Northampton Manor Health Care. He was the husband of the late Mary Louise Linton Holland, who died in 1993. They were married for 54 years.Born July 29, 1917, in Brunswick, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Mida Palmer Holland. Charley was raised on his father's farm in Harrisville, near Mount Airy. He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School. He began his working career at the Maryland Chick Hatchery, which was formerly located in downtown Frederick. In 1963, he began his career at Frederick Trading Co. as a hardware salesman. He retired from there in 1982. Charley's passion for baseball led him to play for the Ijamsville Baseball Club from 1938 until the early 1960s. He also played for the Frederick City Fast Pitch Softball League on the Dr Pepper team in the late 1940s. Charley coached and managed Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues in Frederick City for many years. He was an avid gardener, planting a large vegetable garden every year. Charley also enjoyed woodworking and he built beautiful furniture over the years. He was a longtime member of Grace United Church of Christ in Frederick. He also regularly attended Food and Friends in Libertytown. Charley is survived by two sons, Mr. Ronnie S. Holland and wife, Joan, of New Midway, and Mr. J. Todd Holland and wife, Kristi, of Middletown; three grandsons, Mr. Kevin Winpigler and wife, Debbie, of Mount Airy, Mr. Thomas Holland and wife, Venetia, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Mr. Benjamin Holland of Middletown; two granddaughters, Mrs. Jennifer Kittrell and husband, Richard, of Anderson, Ind., and Miss Emily Holland of Middletown; and four great-grandchildren, Timothy and Grace Winpigler of Mount Airy, and Logan and Wyatt Kittrell of Anderson. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Finnyfrock of Frederick and Mrs. Norma Badgeley of New Jersey. In addition to his wife and parents, Charley was predeceased by an infant daughter, Sandra Ann Holland, in 1941. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Foster and the Rev. R. Christopher Spruill, from Grace United Church of Christ. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Grace United Church of Christ, 25 E.
