Mr. Richard Eugene Smith



Richard Eugene Smith, 88, of Frederick, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Bessye Hough Smith, who passed away on Jan. 25, 1994. Born on Oct. 29, 1921, in Red Lion, Pa., his parents were F. Harold and Elsie Schaffer Dalberg.

Mr. Smith grew up in Red Lion. He moved to Richmond, Va., during World War II. He than moved to the Washington area and worked at First Federal Savings and Loan Association, beginning his employment in 1946. He retired as vice president in 1983. In his retirement, he lived in Frederick, becoming a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, FSK Lions Club and the local chapter of AARP.

Mr. Smith is survived by his son, Robert E. Boyer and wife, Jo Anne, of Middletown, and daughter-in-law, Joan W. Boyer of Silver Spring. He was the grandfather of Robert C. Boyer and his wife, Erin, Michael G. Boyer and John C. Boyer. He was the great-grandfather of Coady L. Boyer and Brianna P. Boyer. He is additionally survived by his brother, Earl Smith of Palmyra, Pa. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Charles Donald Boyer, who passed away on Jan. 9, 1999.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Keeney and Basford, P.A., Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. W. Philip Fogarty will officiate. Interment will follow at Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore.

Contributions may be made in Mr. Smith's name to his church, Zion Lutheran Church, 107 W. Main St., Middletown, MD 21769.
