Mr. John G. Gowin

Mr. John G. Gowin, 90, of Frederick, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Country Meadows, Frederick. He was the husband of the late Edythe D. Gowin. They were married for 55 years.Born Jan. 28, 1919, in Avon, N.Y., he was the son of the late Myron N. and Grace Taylor Gowin. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Iceland for two years before participating in the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France. After the war, he continued his military service in the Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1968 as a senior master sergeant. He was a life member of the American Legion. John was a career federal employee who retired from the National Security Agency in 1975. An outgoing, friendly person, he was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and was very active in the social activities at Country Meadows, where he resided. Formerly he served as past president of several senior citizen groups and was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Woodbine, where he could be found most Sundays greeting congregation members. John was a lifelong sports enthusiast who enjoyed bowling, golf, playing pool and watching his favorite teams. Surviving is a son, John R. Gowin and his wife, Marcia, of Ijamsville; grandchildren, Daniel Gowin and wife, Krista, of Hagerstown, Laura Crawford and husband, Cody, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Eric (Joey) Gowin of Ijamsville, Emily Gowin of Ijamsville, Michael Gowin and wife, Cindy, of Bryantown, and Robert Gowin and wife, Cathy, of Orlando, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Trevor Gowin, Noah, Aidan and Ileigh Crawford, Peyton and Michael Gowin Jr., and Caitlyn Gowin; daughter-in-law, Susan Gowin of Bryantown; brother, Roland Gowin of Arizona; and sisters, Cora Phillips of New York and Grace Hall of Florida. Mr. Gowin was preceded in death by a son, James Michael Gowin; a brother, Gerald Gowin; and a sister, Margie Abott. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the funeral home. The Rev. Roger Rinker will officiate.
