Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins plans to travel throughout the county to meet with residents and discuss their concerns. He was scheduled to meet with the Sabillasville community Tuesday night and will hold another meeting Thursday near Thurmont .
Other communities he plans to meet with include Blue Ridge, Summit and Foxville. The face-to-face discussions will be scheduled as often as needed, Jenkins said.
"I think people need to be in touch with law enforcement," he said. "I want them to know I'm accessible."
Smaller communities need an avenue to address problems they face, he said. He wants to work with the community to reach solutions for the pressing issues in each area.
Last week, The News-Post asked readers:
Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins plans to make his way around the county over the next few months to meet residents and hear their concerns. What is most pressing to you?
Of 146 votes, 52 percent said illegal immigration should be the first issue addressed, while 16 percent said burglaries/thefts were the most important. Gangs placed third with 14 percent, and 10 percent said drugs.
Just 3 percent said traffic violations are the biggest concern, and 3 percent voted "other." Vandalism took 2 percent of the vote, and 1 percent of voters said "not sure."
Prostitution did not receive any votes.
Ed Morgan wrote, "We are at the front end of the ills that illegal aliens bring with them. Virginia locales are fighting back. Gov. O'Malley supports them with our tax dollars and Gray, Gardner and Hagen will not challenge them. Here they come! How do you say 'Fredneck' in Spanish?"
Fred Davis wrote, "Sheriff Chuck needs to direct his crime-fighting efforts against gangs. By doing that, he works on the illegal immigration problem. Ever heard of any Thurmont gangs? That's because there aren't any. The only gang causing the most trouble, creating the most worry, is MS13. This fear is well-founded since there is considerable difficulty infiltrating it, and traversing the language barrier. Let's get some gang busts for drugs and guns, put them in front of a Judge that hammers them in the court room, and I think both problems might get the hint."
