BALTIMORE -- Damascus coach Dan Makosy has found a unique way to remember the number of state football championships his team has won and the years it won them.He has three children -- one was born in 2003, the second in 2005 and the third was born earlier this year.
During each of those years, the Hornets have won a state championship. The latest state title came on Thursday, when Damascus defeated Hereford 40-20 behind the stellar play of quarterback Kyle Frazier at M&T Bank Stadium.
Makosy said he and his wife aren't planning to have any more children, but the Hornets may not be finished winning state crowns.
"Our teams have gotten better each time," Makosy said. "I think we're more balanced than we've ever been."
Thursday's win marks the first state title for Damascus since it won the state Class 4A championship in 2005. The Hornets finish the season 13-1.
Damascus has won seven state championships. The Hornets also won state Class 2A titles in 1981,1992 and 1993; and the state 3A crown in 1996.
Their lone loss this year was to 4A power Quince Orchard during the early part of the season, 35-6. Since then, Damascus has dominated just about every opponent it has faced.
The Hornets' success on Thursday was based around two playmakers -- Frazier and running back Evan Zedler.
Frazier completed 13 of 16 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown and Zedler rushed for 222 yards on 35 carries with two touchdowns.
Makosy joked that he promised Frazier 25 pass attempts in the game. "Sorry about that, Kyle," he said.
But Frazier more than made up for that with four rushing touchdowns. He scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, a 2-yarder in the second quarter, a 6-yarder in the third quarter and finished the Damascus scoring on a 6-yard run in the final period.
"They were keying on Evan when we got close to the goal line on some of those drives," Frazier said. "So I would roll out with the ball to throw the defense off."
Lee Hertel was the leading receiver for Damascus with six catches for 162 yards and a touchdown. His TD reception was good for 19 yards.
NOTES: Lonnie Liggins led Hereford with 109 yards on 19 carries. ...
Damascus led 27-7 at halftime.
