Emmitsburg -- Organizers of a new museum at Mount St. Mary's University are hoping visitors leave with both knowledge of how oppressed people around the world live and a desire to change that. The school's Museum of Oppression will be open to the public until Friday. Sean Adams, director of campus activities, presented the idea to student organizations earlier this year, and groups like Campus Ministries, the Hispanic Cultural Association, the Black Student Union and Amnesty International planned the five individual exhibits. "As a university, especially one strong in our Catholic mission and identity, working to help others in need is a necessity," Adams said. "By helping to educate the campus and community about the forms of oppression occurring in the world today, and offering hopeful and positive actions we can each take, the goal is to both educate and empower those that visit the location to make a difference in stopping oppression in all of its locations and forms." Each of the museum's five rooms focuses on a type of oppression, including religious, racial, gender, social/political, and abortion and the death penalty. The exhibits feature examples from inside the U.S. and around the world. The museum also includes three personal reflection rooms for visitors. "We recognize that it is impossible to address all aspects of oppression in a single museum, but we believe this to be a good start," Adams said. "All the rooms will have positive stories (and) information to show what is and what can be done to help put an end to these examples of oppression. We hope this experience leaves visitors with a stronger knowledge about oppression and its concerns and hopefully a little more insight about themselves."
