Experts from Standard Solar Inc. and Potomac Wind Energy Inc. will present information about solar and wind appliance opportunities and how to determine if a property might be right for such an investment at a free forum from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Urbana Fire Station, 3602 Urbana Pike.The program is for homeowners, homeowners associations and others considering using wind and/or solar appliances personally or cooperatively, for agricultural, educational, faith-based/nonprofit, municipal, industrial and commercial power production. Standard Solar Inc. has designed and installed residential solar electric systems throughout the mid-Atlantic region and recently completed the installation of 205 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof of the U.S. Department of Energy headquarters. Potomac Wind Energy Inc. is a major supplier of Skystream small wind systems. The firm installed a Skystream wind turbine at the U.S. Botanical Gardens. The presentations will include information about net metering and new tax credits, grants and incentives to help make solar and wind return-on-investment decisions more favorable. The event is sponsored by Our CommonWealth, a coalition of local environmental groups.

Round 2: Snow expected to fall today, Wednesday
Fast on the heels of the largest 24-hour snowfall to hit the Frederick County since 1983, meteorologists are predicting another round of heavy snow and wind to hit today.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Monday afternoon for the area, including Frederick County, and said 10 to 20 inches of snow is possible by Wednesday night.

School closures cause makeup schedule revision
Even though Frederick County Public Schools are closed today -- using the sixth snow day this school year -- the school system will not hold school on the Monday Presidents Day holiday as the first scheduled snow makeup day.

The procession to the Frederick Christian Fellowship Church was led by Frederick County Sheriff's deputies. Dressed in full military regalia, Marines carried Smith's casket into the church followed by family members as more Marines stood at attention.
