Matthew Goetzinger was in the process of making a decision. The 19-year-old Keedysville resident took a year off after graduating from Boonsboro High School in 2008 to decide what he wanted to do with his life.
He was choosing between going to Hagerstown Community College or joining the Navy.
"He wanted to be a pilot all his life," said Toni Ruiz, his aunt.
That dream will not be realized.
Goetzinger was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Md. 632 north of Md. 63 in Downsville about 1:25 a.m. Friday, according to Maryland State Police in Hagerstown. A passenger, Ryan Lewis, of Boonsboro, was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Friday was Lewis' 19th birthday.
Goetzinger was driving a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer south on Md. 632 at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the center line, struck an embankment on the opposite side of the road and overturned, police said. Goetzinger was wearing a seat belt. Police do not know yet if alcohol contributed to the crash.
Goetzinger's family has received an outpouring of support and sympathy for the loss of a young man who got good grades, worked at a sandwich shop for four years and played on his high school's basketball team.
"He was a great kid," Ruiz said. "A lot of family and friends really loved him."
Funeral arrangements for Goetzinger had not been confirmed as of midday Friday.
